SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITIES OF ADVENTURES

Active leisure time in associations and nature

In Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality people are traditionally active - also in their leisure time both when it comes to free adventures in the varied nature and in the many associations.

Do you fancy cycling, running or walks in nature? Or would you rather prefer to go surfing or angling? Well, then we almost need not say any more: Open the door and seize all the opportunities in nature. We have lots of clean water and fresh air.

The roaring sea, the North Sea, marks the municipal border all the way towards the west, and we have big meadow- and nature areas around the Skjern Å River, which also includes the only river delta in Denmark. In general, we have lots of open land, forest areas and streams offering good opportunities of experiencing nature as well as going hunting and angling.

We also call our municipality the Realm of Nature since we are aware that the good life and the many opportunities stem from the diverse nature, in the middle of which we are living.

ASSOCIATION- AND CLUB LIFE

In Denmark people traditionally join clubs and associations, ranging from professional and political interests to leisure activities and special hobbies, and in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality we can pride ourselves of being one of the strongholds in the country for associations. According to the latest statistics there are more than 800 different associations in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality, so one or several associations will be likely to match your interests, and - as a newcomer - you can use these to build a new network.

In all towns and villages you will for example find a number of different sports associations where members are diligent users of nature as well as the 26 sports- and swimming centres and the many outdoor grounds in the municipality.

Actually, we hold a record. DBU - the Danish Football Association - estimates that every 10th citizen in the Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality is a member of a football club. In the village of Spjald it is even every third citizen.

VOLUNTARY WORK

At the same time many of us are passionate volunteers in our spare time. As many as 57% of the citizens in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality lend a hand to some sort of voluntary work. Many parents are active in our children’s swimming club, football club and help out when the civic association arranges communal dining at the village hall. Others happily lend a hand where needed. For example at the HOSPICE or as a Red Cross visitor.

Through voluntary work many build a new network and as a foreign newcomer another advantage will be the opportunity to practice the Danish language.

There are also many citizens in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality who work on a voluntary basis to ensure that the newcomers of the municipality quickly will be able to settle down in their new surroundings. Volunteer welcome ambassadors ensure that newcomers are welcomed, given information about the area and offered contact with other local citizens. E.g. more citizens help new foreign citizens to practice their Danish.

Charlotte and Ian

Danish/English couple:

Wish of living the good life

”Above all, we just wanted to be together and live the good life. We love being together” says the Danish/English couple Charlotte and Ian Coles who have settled down in an idyllic old farm house at Kloster, halfway between the Ringkøbing Fjord and the Stadil Fjord and close to the town of Ringkøbing.

It is not surprising that the couple had a wish of the good life in peaceful surroundings with lots of nature. Ian was a Major in the British Army, which meant the couple had moved around military bases in England and Germany for years. Ian had also been deployed close to the world’s war zones, leaving Charlotte alone and suffering months of deprivation during their first year in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality.

They bought the old farmhouse overlooking the Stadil Fjord in 2013, and Charlotte moved in full-time, while Ian could only come home as work allowed. But now the good life has really started as Ian retired this summer.

Ian is 48 years old and he has just landed a job with Vestas - the wind turbine manufacturer – as a Project Training Leader.

Ioana and Sorin

Romanian Family:

We have been made very welcome

”We love our country, Romania, but we have also grown very fond of Denmark which has become our home,” says 37-year-old Sorin Ungureanu who - together with his wife Ioana and their two children - find themselves so much at home that in the autumn of 2017 they bought the house of their dreams in Borris. Borris is a town with approximately 800 inhabitants in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality – geographically the biggest municipality in Denmark.

“We have been living here since 2011 and our children are fully integrated in the local community and gradually, so are we. We have been made to feel really welcome in this town. People gladly help us and we are very happy about living here,” Sorin says whilst simultaneously smiling at Erling Søndergaard - one of the passionate locals who likes to give a lending hand. Erling has helped the family with the purchase of their house, and as a friend of the family he joins our conversation as to why Sorin and Ioana came to Denmark and what it is like for a foreign family to move to Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality.

”We are also happy having you here. We can tell that you like being here, and you have also done a great deal to become a part of the community,” Erling points out referring to the fact that Sorin among others has been active in leading a father-child gymnastics team and a table tennis team in town.
